John Gunning – Irish-born International Sumo Wrestler [Reference: 4]

John Gunning

John Gunning hails from Castlerea, Co. Roscommon, and while on holidays in Japan in 2000, fell in love with the place, started teaching English and took up Sumo Wrestling.

Having become an International Sumo Wrestler, and represented Ireland at three World Championships, he now writes a Sumo column for the Japan Times, as well as writing articles for American Football International, his other main Sport.

Conor McGregor is the most famous Irish-born UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) Fighter, having ammassed 22 Wins from 26 Bouts.

Aislig Daly was the first Irish-born Woman Fighter in the UFC, and retired due to aBrain Scan “Abnormality”.

Six Irish-Born wrestlers have won titles with WWE World Wrestling Entertainment, the most notable of which are Becky Lynch (aka “The Man”) who won the inaugural Women’s Smackdown Championship in 2016, Finn “Demon King” Balor who beat Seth Rollins to win the inaugural Universal Championship, and Sheamus, who won the World Title four times.
