Polo was first played in Ancient Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan, and was brought to Ireland by those returning from the British Empire.

There are a number of variants, including Polocrosse (Invented in Australia in the mid-20th Century as a form of Lacrosse on horseback), Bicycle Polo (Invented in the Phoenix Park, Dublin over 100 years ago as an introduction to Polo) and more recently Segway Polo.
